Appreciated securities are sometimes considered when a donor wishes to take a tax deduction on the full value of the gift and avoid capital gains on the transfer. In many cases, the actual cost to the donor is far less than the value of the gift to the school. For questions, contact Lisa Ferraro (L.Ferraro@eaglehill.org), Director of Development. Click here for instructions for making a gift of stock.
In general, it is not advisable to give securities that are presently worth less than you paid for them. If the sale of stocks or bonds would result in a deductible loss, it is usually to your advantage to sell them to establish a tax loss and then donate the proceeds to Eagle Hill School. We consider this a creative way to make lemonade out of lemons!
A donor-advised fund (DAF) is a charitable giving program that allows you to combine the most favorable tax benefits with the flexibility to support your favorite causes. If you have a donor-advised fund, DAF Direct enables you to recommend grants to this nonprofit directly from your DAF (as long as your DAF’s sponsoring organization is participating). Click here for more information on the DAF.
More than 1,000 businesses and companies match donations by their employees and retirees to independent and private schools.
Donors initiate the process by contacting their company’s human resources department or corporate foundation for the appropriate forms. Donors receive credit from Eagle Hill School for both their original gift and the matching gift. The combined amount is recognized in our Giving Report in the Fall issue of our school magazine.
Endowed scholarship funds are those that provide a specific dollar amount, usually in honor of someone, to a student who fulfills the criteria as set by the school’s scholarship committee.
Individuals, families, foundations, or corporations may:
(1) Set up an endowed scholarship fund in honor of their family, their foundation, or someone of significance. Minimum gift amounts are required and must be approved by the Advancement Committee of the Board of Trustees.
(2) Fund the yearly cost of tuition for one or more students by contacting Lisa Ferraro, Director of Development.
For some of our donors, a pledge gift makes it easier for them to manage their donation over a longer period of time. If you pledge for our fiscal year of July 1 to June 30, the Development Office will send reminders to ensure that your gift is recorded by fiscal year-end.
We encourage pledges made before November 30 as this allows the Board of Trustees to set the next fiscal budget with foreknowledge of anticipated funds.
Each year, Eagle Hill provides an Annual Report with a detailed analysis of the previous year along with recognition of those who have supported the Eagle Hill Fund. You have the option of being listed by name in a giving range, or anonymously.
Yes! Recognizing that tuition is a challenge for many families, and everyone’s giving capacity is different, we ask that everyone in the Eagle Hill community give to the best of their ability and to make Eagle Hill a philanthropic priority. Your commitment speaks volumes to prospective families, foundations, corporations and grant makers who determine their interest in supporting our school based on the parent participation rate. Gifts to the Eagle Hill Fund range from $5-$100,000. The average gift from current parents is $1,808. Your contribution to the Eagle Hill Fund sends a strong message about your commitment to Eagle Hill and the education your student is receiving. Last year 100% of the Board of Trustees and faculty and staff gave to the Eagle Hill Fund.
The Development Office sends out a variety of solicitations throughout the year: letters, cards, emails, etc. While we make every attempt to connect with our donors in these ways, a peer phone call is often the best way to communicate and help answer any questions about the Eagle Hill Fund and other opportunities for giving. As well, it is a nice way to make a connection, schedule a coffee, or just share experiences. If you prefer not to receive a solicitation call at home, you may make your gift prior to the call period in early November and your name will be removed from the call list.
Yes, it is fully tax deductible in accordance with the tax laws.
