Upper School Tutorial Program
The tutorial class at Eagle Hill is the foundation of a student’s program. The tutorial class is designed to provide intensive remedial instruction in the areas encompassed by the language arts. The tutor is responsible for the development of reading skills by offering instruction in decoding, phonemic awareness, and word analysis strategies. In addition, emphasis is placed on developing reading comprehension, oral and written expression, spelling, vocabulary, and appropriate supplementary skills (e.g., study skills). Working in a setting with a small student/teacher ratio allows the tutor to provide support and foster confidence in academic abilities. Students in the Upper School may have a tutorial class that meets once or twice a day. Students in the twice a day tutorial generally are still working on developing decoding skills, in addition to spelling, vocabulary, comprehension, and composition. Instruction in spelling, vocabulary and comprehension is integrated with the decoding instruction. A twice a day tutorial generally consists of two to four students with a teacher. When students are reading at grade level, they move into the tutorial/study skills program, where their tutorial meets only once a day, and they have a larger group study skills class. These tutorials also are small group classes–generally three or four students with a teacher. Emphasis in the tutorial at this level generally focuses on further development of higher level comprehension skills, grammar and writing.
