Course Descriptions
Study Skills
Study Skills A* will focus on learning styles, metacognition, hidden curriculum, study environment, time management, executive functioning, and note-taking from both lectures and written material.
Study Skills B* will briefly review learning styles and time management and then progress to note-taking skills, test preparation, and test-taking strategies.
These workshops will not only highlight the areas listed above, but will also focus on the application of these skills through discussion, worksheets, self evaluation, activities, and technology.
*Study Skills A is not a prerequisite for Study Skills B.
Writing
The Writing workshop will offer instruction in specific strategies for expository writing. Instruction will be provided in a variety of units such as summaries, “how-to” essays, compare/contrast, persuasion, and more. Within these units, instruction will emphasize using graphic organizers, conveying main idea, elaborating, creating powerful supporting details, and writing strong introductions and conclusions. The student’s own writing will provide the basis for instruction. Writing mechanics will also be incorporated based on the student’s individual needs. Mac computers will be utilized for this course.
Mac-based Technology
The Mac-based Technology workshop instruction will focus on building technology skills through projects that are representative of typical school assignments. Applications such as Inspiration, Keynote, Pages, Excel, iMovie, and others, will be explored. In addition, students will learn how technology can be used for research and to improve their organizational skills. Computers are provided, but students may bring their own laptops if they prefer. (PCs are not used for any of these sessions.)
